Lyrics
Those Eyes©
Black puppy dumped at my gate; tail wagging silent cries:
let me in, let joy in, don’t leave me here to die.
We need no extra pets! Don’t play the coy coquette!
But then I looked into her eyes, those eyes.
Hearts hopin’, gates opened, you’re always at my knee;
Through fields with horse and cattle, you’re always here to please.
We run through grass and mud. You love to swim the floods.
The evening fires in those eyes, smiling eyes.
One day a storm was brewing, you left the farm to roam.
Wind skirling, rain roaring, and still you are not home.
Did thunder turn your tracks? Did shotguns aim and crack?
Your throat by muskrat packs slit wide? Oh, those eyes!
So, give this time its time now; “the universe is change,” they say.
But there’s a lump in your throat when you can’t but invoke those yesterdays:
a hole in the muscle of hope, each joy that’s gone.
Mystery mutt with cartoon scruff, cheerful just as you were tough,
where’d you come from, where’d you go to, will memories be enough?
Your path is overgrown, empty your bed our roads,
who’ll find your buried bones?
